Winter Magic and The Holidays

December 5, 2017

There is some exciting news this December. First, the City of Charleston is offering free parking at all meters and city run parking buildings in Downtown Charleston - Saturdays until Christmas. This does not include the Park Place garage on Washington Street. Also, our deadline for framing needed by Christmas is 12/13 at noon. The Art Store will remain open until 8 pm on Thursdays until Christmas and will offer discounts on selected items those days. Those items and dates are:

Thursday 12/7 our Winter Magic feature will be 20% off Jon Salo wood bowls, salt cellars. These items are hand turned and made from locally harvested hard wood in West Virginia. The salt cellars include J Q Dickinson Salt!

We will also feature GIO tea candles at 20% off. These whimsical tea light holders look great in groups, and you can mix and match the different styles. All of them are made from sustainable bamboo plywood with a natural oil finish. Please keep in mind that bamboo is a natural product and there is a range of variation in the color and shading of each sheet.

One of our Thursday 12/14 Winter Magic features is Anne Scarpa McCauley Baskets. Her wild Honeysuckle Baskets will be 20% off. They are made of vines from the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills of Virginia. The Smithsonian American Art Museum permanent basket collection includes Anne’s honeysuckle baskets. Two of Anne’s baskets are part of the Smithsonian permanent basket collection: the Cole-Ware collection of American baskets.

Also on Thursday 12/14 Winter Magic will feature 20% off Petrified Forest Pottery. Each piece of this pottery begins with a quiet walk in the woods, where the artist selects the leaves that make each piece a unique work of art. There are no two pieces exactly the same. While the clay is still soft, colors are applied and the leaf design is arranged. These pieces of pottery will make any table setting or event a bit more interesting and arty.

On Thursday 12/21 (ArtWalk) our Winter Magic feature will be vases & ornaments. They will all be 20% off. Our glass vases range from small to large in the most beautiful handblown glass. The whimsical ornaments run the spectrum too. Anyone on your Christmas list would love receiving a beautiful, creative ornament.

We will be open on Sunday, December 24 from noon to 4 pm for you last minute art shoppers. We will be closed from December 25 to January 1.

Tommy White: Frankenstein's Garden

October 4, 2017

Starting October 14, 2017 The Art Store will be exhibiting Tommy White: Frankenstein’s Garden. This will be a solo exhibition entailing an ample collection of Tommy White’s work from 2013 to fresh off the easel this year. Tommy was born in Detroit and his painting career began at Clemson University where he received his M.F.A. focused on painting and then a B.A. in ceramics from Michigan State University. Subsequently he chaired the painting department of Cleveland Institute of Art and then taught at the University of Oklahoma. His work is in many private, institutional and corporate collections across the United States and he has exhibited in 24 states and Washington, D.C. His work has also been shown internationally in Melbourne, Australia and Seoul, South Korea.

According to Mr. White, "My paintings explore the relationship between environment, psyche, and balance. Environment is characterized by any tangible force affecting an individual’s physical and/or conscious/unconscious self. Hard-edged monochromatic grids framed by neutral grays depict this. Psyche is represented by the lyrically ornate, amalgamated black and white imagery. Compositionally, these disparate elements attempt to develop a sense of harmony and poise.   Upon further examination, one recognizes that the environment is slightly off-kilter, positioning the psyche to seek balance. By amassing and manipulating accessories of perceived value, like positioning weights on a scale, a remedy is sought. For many, these accessories have become comforts of consolation, small vices that enable us to rationalize and navigate within our contingent world.

My formal investigations focus on three primary concerns: subtleties of hue, visual activity, and pareidolia (psychically charged imagery). I attempt to optically animate each composition by combining these elements pictorially. This effect varies from piece to piece, ranging from readily apparent to something quite subtle."

The opening will be October 14, 2017 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm with an artist talk at 6:30. This show will be exhibited until November 17. Our Red Dot Day - Artists inventory reduction - Everything must sell! event will be on Saturday, November 18. Then, "Winter Magic", our holiday show will open.

The Art Store is located in the Downtown area of Charleston at 233 Hale Street. Hours are Tuesday – Friday 10- 5:30; Saturday 10-5. For further information please call 304-345-1038 or visit us online at www.theartstorewv.com.

Watermedia Trio

September 5, 2017

Water Media Trio Show at The Art Store, Saturday, September 9, 2017 (Charleston WV).

Beginning September 9, The Art Store will be hosting our WaterMedia Trio exhibition. We will showcase three woman water media artists -- watercolor and acrylic. Each artist will be exhibiting recent works that are Impressionistic, Abstract and Photo-Realistic. This curated show will embrace a wide range of subject matter including still life, portraiture, landscape and abstract, appealing to a variety of interests. All three artists are Signature members of the West Virginia Watercolor Society. The WVWS strives to promote and endure the high standards of the art of watercolor painting in the state of West Virginia.

Chris Krupinski discovered watercolor in the mid-1980’s and was hooked, having a passion for the medium ever since. She earned a Dolphin Fellow designation with the WVWS in 2015, established to encourage artists to create more award-winning paintings and for the advancement of the art of watercolor. Her work has been shown internationally in China, Greece, Italy and Turkey and she has won more than 100 national awards and honors. Chris focuses on details in her painting with light and shadow being an intricate part of her photo realistic work.

Laurie Goldsmith-Warren is from New York and is currently living in Buckhannon, West Virginia. She is well credentialed having exhibited across the US as well as internationally. She has many signature memberships to state watercolor societies. Laurie’s work focuses on people, places and things. When deciding on a subject to paint, she tries to look, not only at the subject itself, but the beauty (sometimes hidden) in the colors, shadows and perception of the object. She captures the form of the subject and also the feel of its surroundings and its inner nature. She teaches painting workshops and enjoys jurying exhibitions.

Pamela Gatens was born in Dallas, Texas and comes from an artistic family. Her father was a professional photographer and mother an expert seamstress. She moved to West Virginia in 2002 and currently resides in Hillsboro. She is a member of the American Impressionist Society. She paints almost every day and loves to use bright colors which she feels embody freedom. Pamela also exhibits with Carlton Varney online and at The Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs.

WaterMedia Trio opens with a reception honoring the artists on September 9, 2017 at 6 p.m. It will be shown during normal business hours or by appointment at The Art Store until October 10, 2017. It will be our featured exhibit during ArtWalk on September 21.

For Shades of Summer ArtWalk on July 20th, 5:00pm to 8:00pm, we will be hosting live painting with Tom Acosta. His work is represented in our gallery and will be available for purchase. Acosta paints with purpose, depicting contemporary social realities and the everyday activities of ordinary people. His work is divided into two categories: reality and fantasy/allegorical. Aside from a painting in the permanent collection at the Butler Institute, Tom has exhibited at the Clay Center, Tamarack and the Gertrude Smith House.

The ArtWalk on August 17th will feature a Nellie Rose Trunk Show. It will run 10:00 am to  8:00 pm Thursday and conclude Friday, August 18th at 5:30 pm. Her work focuses on hand-painted clothing and hand-dyed shibori scarves. Nellie Rose collections are one-of-a-kind pieces, and handmade in small batches which continue the dedicated process of slow fiber. Nellie Rose Davis is a native West Virginian and daughter of textile artists specializing in shibori; a Japanese method of resist dye. She was a Fullbright Fellow from 2011 to 2012 during which she studied Japanese textiles and design at Osaka University of Arts in Osaka, Japan.

Geometrics at The Art Store

January 26, 2017 - Kimberly Bradley

Although the genre was popularized by avant garde artists in the early twentieth century, similar motifs have been used in art since ancient times. Geometrics will be exhibited from February 11 to April 1.

Susan was a former art teacher and county art coordinator in Jackson County, WV from 1968-1979.
